Other events calendars, not for ESL
specifically
but possibly also of interest to adult ESL instructors:
American Association for Adult & Continuing
Education (AAACE)
http://www.albany.edu/aaace/
This
major organization with 60 affiliates has an annual fall convention
and also sponsors the COABE Conference (Commission on Adult Basic
Education) every spring (usually in April or May). Oddly, they do not
seem to have much, if anything, about ESL. For other adult education
topics, though, this is the place to go.
American Association of Applied Linguistics
(AAAL)
http://www.aaal.org/
This is
the organization for academics involved in research on how language
is learned. The field includes psycholinguistics, pedagogy,
bilingualism and second language acquisition. They have a large
annual conference (usually in Feb or March) and they also offer a
summer institute.
American Library Association (ALA)
http://www.ala.org
They have
a calendar on their website that includes some events for literacy
programs.
International Dyslexia Association
(IDA)
http://www.interdys.org
This
non-profit organization is 50 years old--they were formerly called
the Orton Dyslexia Society. Their site has a conferences page which
includes listings for state and local events; contact persons.
International Reading Association (IRA)
http://www.ira.org/conferences/
This site
has a thorough listing of events on (mainstream) reading and
literacy, including their annual conference, state, regional and
world events. They also have a Forum series to discuss literacy
issues and society. The IRA is a good source for research and
scholarly work on the teaching of reading; they have several good
publications.
Learning Disabilities Association (LDA) of
America
http://www.ldanatl.org/events/LDStateconf.html
They have
a nice calendar that lists regional and local events (talks,
seminars, etc) all over the U.S. and Canada.
National Association for Adults with Special
Learning Needs (NAASLN)
http://www.naasln.com
This
association views itself as a "hub" which partners with many of the
other organizations on this list to bring 'special needs' issues into
the agenda of those dealing with adult education. They organize an
early fall conference (held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 2001) that
includes presentations on a wide variety of topics related to
teaching adults in all circumstances, including vocational, workplace
and correctional education.
National Association for Bilingual Education
(NABE)
http://www.nabe.org/
The
mission of this 30-year-old, Washington DC-based organization is to
benefit the education of language minority students in American
schools. Although this means their focus is on K-12 education, some
of the issues (such as multiculturalism) could apply also to adult
education. They host a major national conference each year in
February, which does include workshops on adult and vocational
education. They also feature some top-notch speakers, so if your
interests include public education you'll want to check them
out.
National Clearinghouse for Bilingual Education
(NCBE)
http://www.ncbe.gwu.edu/
This is a
wonderful resource for all kinds of information "focusing on the
education of linguistically and culturally diverse students." See
their Conference Calendar where you can find information about
national and regional events you won't find listed anywhere else.
Also look at the "State Resource pages" which list programs, agencies
and organizations that serve these students in each state. They also
have a very good "Language and Education Links" page.
National Council of Teachers of English
(NCTE)
http://ncte.org/meet/
This site
for (mainstream) English teachers lists their annual convention,
their many conferences and regional affiliate conferences all over
the U.S. Although they don't focus on ESL issues, many issues such as
learning strategies and the teaching of writing do overlap. (The site
also has a great online catalog of educational literature.)
National Institute for Literacy (NIFL) Calendar
of Events
http://www.nifl.gov/cgi-bin/Calendar/calendar_world.cgi
This is
an extensive and detailed calendar that includes literacy-related
events in the U.S. Note that you can select any month and year to
view.
Teachers of English to Speakers of Other
Languages (TESOL)
Calendar located at: http://www.tesol.org/isaffil/confcalendar.html
We listed
TESOL's annual conference on our main Calendar page of course, as it
is of interest to ESL teachers. If you are looking for conferences on
a wide range of other educational issues though, take a look through
their online calendar--they list some very interesting items. Looking
for TESOL/EFL conferences overseas? This is the best place to
look.

here, please let us know!
