Special announcements for our Hands-on English fans:
| Sept. 9, 2011-- Dear HOE friends, I
am very sorry that I will not be able to re-launch HOE this fall, as I
had hoped. As many of you know, I am in treatment for chronic Lyme
disease and am still too disabled to work. Apparently I have had this
infection for many years, and it takes a long time to treat it. For the
last few months, I've been practically an invalid. I am so fortunate
that my husband can take care of me! The disease causes not only
significant pain and severe fatigue, but most disturbingly it causes
cognitive problems. I have trouble with short-term memory, and with
functioning on a basic level with things like orientation and
problem-solving. For a long time I was even unable to read!
Fortunately, this is improving but I certainly cannot get back to my
normal activities yet. My doctor assures my I will get well, and I am determined and working hard to do so. I miss all the interaction with ESL teachers and am thinking of you this fall as you start your new teaching year. I hope you'll let me know what your students are doing, and what kinds of lessons you're working on! I will collect any input for use in future publications. Thank you! If you are interested in Lyme disease, see the film "Under Our Skin" which was broadcast on PBS this spring. Happy teaching!
